Old Hammond River Speedway was closed the first year that NBIS opened.  Rumors had it that the owner of NBIS purchased the site, and used the grandstands at his facility.

I'll check into this today & find out if there is any truth to the rumour.

Cheers!

While I haven't gotten word from the source that I was told to check with, I did mention it to some people at the place I am at right now & they say that there is no way that they could have transported the stands from St John to Geary. The stands that were at Hammond River, they said, were quite worn out & dilapidated, splinter city & all wood construction - the stands at Geary are steel frame with wood plank seating - as well, a couple of the people I talked to state that the stands at Hammond River burned down several years ago & I did find evidence to support that & took pics. Apparently kids would frequent the place to drink, among other things, as it is in the woods & hidden from view from prying eyes. The person I talked to at Geary, also stated that when the current owners bought the track in 96, if the Hammond River track & land were owned by the Geary track, it was not part of the sale to the present owners. Hope this clears some things up & if I ever do hear back from the original owner - unless I see him there this weekend for the CPST race & ask him personally - I will post it here for all.

You're welcome Mark, I enjoyed going out to see this place as I never went when it ran. While I was at Cedar Mills Speedway a few weeks later, I found an old poster for Hammond Raceway & it has a pic of the frontstretch with a dozen Sportsman lined up with guys like Brad Mann, Tim Rodgers, Paul Lewis (I think), to name a few. I think there are also pics from the days it ran on the Maritime Race Room site as well, if I'm not mistaken. I think they were put there by Cal Hatfield who drives with the AOW class & who is related to the guy that used to own that track.

Any relation to Ivan Prosser?

Any chance of getting copies of those Brookside photos? What was the name of the track in Barker's Point?

I believe they took the stands from the horse track in SJ... and got them for free from what I understand.

I spent many a happy sunday at brookside speedway. there are a number of great racers that raced at this track. The greatest points champ was the late Dail Johnson from Marysville. He would lift the peanut wheel going into turn one and not set it down till he hit the back stretch. Some of the other noteable drivers that ran there were. Jerry cambell[the owner of petty speedway ] Frank Fraser [ the late Scott frasers father ] Leroy tucker [Shawn Tuckers father ] Jimmie McPherson,Cedric and Dave Bidlake,Jerry [wip] Stafford And many more.

Hi Peter if you still have contact with any of these drivers or their family members it would be great to see some pictures of drivers from the old Brookside Speedway. As far as i am drivers at small tracks like Brookside Speedway and Acton Speedway in Ontario where i was introduced to stock car racing at the age of 6 are the real racers just like the small track drivers of today who race for the love of the sport and to put on a show for the fans.

I SAW RACES AT BARKERS POINT SPEEDWAY AND BROOKSIDE SPEEDWAY IN THE 60'S AN 70'S. MY GRANDPARENTS LIVED ABOUT 1000 FEET FROM BARKERSPOINT SPEEDWAY AND MY UNCLE WOULD TAKE ME TO THE TRACK. I HAD ANOTHER UNCLE DARRELL TITUS THAT WE WOULD WATCH AT BROOKSIDE SPEEDWAY IN HIS  55 OR 56 FORD . WOULD LIKE TO SEE SOME PHOTOS OF BOTH TRACKS.

I remember my grandfather mentioning that he raced at Scoudouc Airfield. I didn't think there was an oval there, I could very well be mistaking for another track/air field. Just wondering if they ran oval races at Scoudouc, if anyone knows that is.

I don't think they ever had an oval there. There was a road course and a drag strip. See: http://www.canadianracer.com/track-display.asp?status=both&trackname=scoudouc&querytype=byname

I just came across this site and got to see the pics of what is left of Hammond River Raceway. I started racing there in 1992 in the bomber division. We had alot of fun there and its really sad to see those pics, but at the same time, it brought back alot of fun memories. I think i might even have some old pictures of us racing there 10 or 15 years ago in a box somwhere. My father raced there when the track first opened, while also racing at the old Airport Raceway, and remember hearing stories of him and my uncle George racing on the old infield track at Exibition Park. I wish that old track (Hammond River) was still around. I really enjoyed seing the old pit stall numbers. #89, Darrel Campbell, and #33 John Robichaud. If my sign was still there, it would have been directly to the right of the #33, and directly to the left or the 89 was Randy and Frank Moore's #34. I can see it like it was yesterday.
To settle an argument of where the stands at NBIS came from, the were purchased by Gerry O'Leary from the organizers of the Canada Games that were held in the mid eighties in Saint John. They were the temporary grandstands used at the Canada Games Stadium.
Thanks for the pics..............and bringing back the memories!

I realize that this is an old discussion and my question may never be seen or answered but could someone tell me exactly where Brookside Speedway used to be?
I was over there today and couldn't find it.
