I was at the very first race they ran in 83 & got some pics from the Supermods there. I also have a bunch of the old programs from then, as well. Very nice track when it ran & the Supers were wickedly fast with the high banking.

Last race at Petty Raceway was September 23th 2000, for end season of Pro-Stock MASCAR Series.

Yes, it's true. i visited this in 2002, and was in really good shape.

I too just visited it on my return to Ontario from Nova Scotia early in January 2005.

It is a shame that it is slowly falling into the clutches of decay and sadly vandals have started to do a lot of damage. Almost all of the windows are broken in the main tower and the concession stands all have had the doors kicked in.

Although I've never seen any races there, I know people who have competed there and they said it was awesome.

What happened to the place, why is it closed?

T.

I agree & in some of the pics I took last year, they show the sad state that vandals have left the place in with papers, glass & chairs all strewn around from the VIP & announcers booth. Inside the concession booths, it was also beat up & had broken items all over as well. Still, I don't think it would take too much to get it back in shape for the racing season, really. It would be a lot of hard work & a certain amount of cash to get it going again & from what I heard from some people down in that area of NB, is that there are people interested in buying it & putting it back in operation, but something is holding things back for some reason or other. I have been told that the last year they ran, the track wanted 'X' amount of Mascar races on dates set by the track, or nothing, so that is what they got - nothing in the way of Mascar dates & that - they say - contributed to the decline in attendance & subsequent closure.

The racing that I saw there from the very first day Jerry Campbell opened the track to the mid 90's, when I happened to be in the area was excellent, mainly I think because it was high banked & the cars could keep a lot of the momentum going through the turns. I know the times they had the Supermodifieds there, they would always put on an excellent show. I still have programs, schedules & advertisements from those days & when I find the time, will re-scan them & send them to this site for others to see.

It could have been for a variety of reasons as to why it closed, just the same as the speculation as to how it came to be built. Jerry Campbell was a driver from many years ago, competing at Pinecrest before moving down east & racing down there & finally building the track (it was said to have been built to compete against Riverglade, just down the road & they even ran the same nights as RG). Jerry still lives across the road from the track, so he probably saw you go in to the track, as well as me last year the 2 times I was in there to take the pics, as well as anyone else that goes in there.

Personally, I would like to see the track open back up & run Fri nights, so that cars can run Geary on Sats & Riverglade on Suns, but I don't know if that will ever happen.

I heard a rumour that Richard Petty was somehow associated with operating Petty raceway is this true

No, absolutely not. I remember when it was all being discussed by Jerry Campbell & how the papers down there alluded to the fact that Richard was involved & Jerry just smiled & didn't really comment on it when asked. I also remember reading in the Times & Transcript back then, Richard was asked about a track being built in NB with his name on it & asked if he was involved & he stated that while it was interesting that his name was part of it, he did in fact have no knowledge or involvement of it. I'm sure if someone was to go in the archives down in Moncton at the Times & Transcript, they could find the articles that were written back then before it opened.

It was named Petty Raceway, for the simple fact that even though it was in the River Glade area, it was just down the road from Petitcodiac. Jerry couldn't call it by the name of the area it was in, because there already was a River Glade Speedway. Also, when Jerry raced from his days at Pinecrest, on up into the 80's after he moved down to NB, his car number was always 45, close to what Lee's & richards were, so it was mentioned that he was a fan of theirs & wanted to have a number close to the Petty's. This is just what the word was around the area racing scene at the time, so it was assumed that with the name of the track, the Petty's were involved.

I discovered MASCAR at Petty Raceway just about the time ACT fell apart in Ontario.  I saw the series run all over New Brunswick, PEI, and Nova Scotia (except Antigonish).  At the time MASCAR was easily more entertaining than any racing in Ontario.  I use to plan my summer vacation around the schedule.  It was specially good here at Petty.

I would love to see this place re-open I think it would bring in the people it is definitly faster track due to the sloped turns. I think a  lot of the sportsman boys would go out there to race would be a great place for some prostock too. The idea of having tese races on a different night then Riverglade is great too, a lot of the boys would run both. I remember going to petty with my dad growing up......

I remember going to Petty Raceway as a kid . It was by far some of the best racing and competition that I have ever seen. Some of the Mascar boys, Clattenburg(Terry and Dean) could run real well on the outside there. Greg Sewart, Scott and Frank, Rollie and the list goes on...........

Petty Raceway is the first track and first time I was ever in a racecar as a driver, I will never forget how in a few hours there, I was in heaven. I have been racing for a few years now and have never felt the same thrill like there was at Petty. The high banks, g-forces, and lightning fast laps. Sure do wish for a miracle to happen an have it open on Fridays or Sundays. With a few improvments and a little support it could and would be the place to race in the Southeasten NB .

If they need volunteers to repair the place count me in!

I am from the area and unfortunatley there hasn't been any gossip as of late on the status of the facility.  Like many previous posts explain, Petty Raceway continues to sit and deteriorate with each day that passes by.  Jerry still checks in on the place frequently, I noticed the pit gate was torn down on day driving by late fall and actually drove into have a look.  Nothing new to report as far as the condition, it could easy be reopened if all the pieces were to fall into place.  I wouldn't hold my breath though, Riverglade Speedway, which is just 2 minutes down the road, seems to be rejuvinated under the new ownership and it would be a tough market for someone to break into and be successful.  Like so many others I miss the high banks of Petty, it is really sad to see it sit there and literally rot away!

Ah Petty Speedway. I did attend the last MASCAR race there and enjoyed it very much. I remember standing at the entrance to turn 1 while they were practicing, and I stood so close to the fence, a piece of rubber hit my face. Not a big one mind you, but a small marble.

Petty closed for a number of reasons, the main one being attendance. Although they got good crowds for the races they ran when it became a “specials only” track, but from what I heard when it ran a full schedule, it had a hard time against River Glade Speedway.

As far as it re-opening is another factor all together. Right now in New Brunswick we’re suffering from a little thing called “lack of cars”, and “low attendance”. I race regularly at Molson Centre for Speed, and have done some stuff at River Glade aswell, and except for special races or Pro Stock events, they average maybe 200 people per race. The car counts are getting better I will admit. Shediac’s 4 cylinder division is thriving and it’s sportsman and street stock divisions are ok, but River Glade’s car counts are poor in the street stock and 4 cylinder divisions. If Petty opened again, it would have a hard time to get the cars because of those 2 other tracks I mentioned, plus with the price of racing nowadays, not many people are getting into the sport anymore.

I would love to see it re-open though. There is the potential to have a thriving stock car community in New Brunswick, and Petty would be a great place to get things really cooking. I always said if I got the lottery, I’d buy the track in a heartbeat, cause it does have what it takes to beat River Glade.

Either way, great track, great racing, a real shame it’s closed. I know I’m gonna try and contact the owner to see what the plans are, and to see if he’d be kind enough to let me test on the track (yeah right but you never know :P)

Don't hold your breath to long. From what I understand, Jerry, who is my sister-in-law's uncle, actually only owns the parking area. The track itself is owned by a group of investors, probably incorporated. Jerry I think was the CEo or chairman of the board or both or something like that. Having met him a time or two, I can tell you thast he is very stubborn. I also know the previuos owner of the Riverglade Speedway, in fact Ernie and Jerry used to be partners in that track, they split over many differences of opinions. When Jerry first got Petit up and running he had a whole bunch of rules that seemed to discourage drivers from racing at Riverglade. Now Mascar has alway I think been a headache for racetrack owners. mainly due to conditions imposed by mascar like a set number of free ticket for mascar management to use at their discreesion. Guess it was kinda questionable wether the extra bother was worth the slight increase in attendance. I know the investors were up in arms over the demise of the track so maybe Jerry bought them out at pennies on the dollar. To bad, it was a nice track and more modern the Riverglade.

I run at the Shediac track, and a lot of guys there say the same thing. It's a shame there couldn't be a one time shot, maybe once a summer, just for teams and drivers, just a big day of racing. that way they wouldn't have to worry about the stands or whatnot, just have a driver's meet and let us all experience a great track!

Given the opportunity, I'd be more than willing to spend a whole day just trying to find a setup that'd work! :D

I use to go to that track all the time when i was younger to see my uncle Glen race. We would always hate on Wayne Smith cause he would always try to wreck my uncle and actually succeeded one time by spin his car over the bank in turn one. After the race you would here him and my cousin Shane cursing up a storm about him. I liked how you could see in the pits and watch what was happening, especially when the fights broke out.

I wish that track was still open, i probably wouldn't have become a racecar driver, if it wasn't for the possibility of racing there.

My father is currently in the process of trying to purchase petty raceway. He is trying for financing as we speak and hopefully after much needed repairs we will be up and running for at least 1 race this year if not for early next!

I went up to the site on a few occasions with my dad while they were building it. I still remember Dave Mollins running the bulldozer and snow on the ground here n there. I think that was the winter/spring of '83. I was there opening day in October of that year. There were no empty seats... cars lined up and down the trans canada highway.  Donnie Pond won the first race in his ministock car. I believe it was silver or gray and # 86. Jim Dunn won the late model feature that afternoon. I spent most of the summer Saturday nights of my teen years at Petty Raceway.... selling programs, taking tickets, and doing odd jobs around the place. It holds so many memories for me I don't know where to start.
