I was at the museum yesterday and read some articles on Tillicum but the biggest surpirse was meeting one of the wife of one of Tillicums former racers!
The track was sold in November 1975, one month after Intervalley in Kamloops and Penticton Speedway proposed a tri-city race series.
I looked through the archives and there were some great shots of the track in it heyday. What a beautiful track! Such a shame. I got the impression that the owner didn't really want a speedway next to his ski hill, even though he built both of them.
The track was sold to a group from Alberta who wanted to build a John Newcombe Tennis Ranch on the site. I can remember as a young child the remians of that failed developement. Turns 1 and 2 had the foundations for the clubhouse ( I think it was a clubhouse?) and a clearing for tennis courts. People need to remeber that in the late 70's and early 80's tennis was a huge trend. By 1982, the ski hill was closed, the track remains sat empty and for sale and Cedar Hot Springs across the road was the only thing left of the big sports and leisure developemnt that was supposed to be there. As for the ski hill, it wasn't really high up enough to get very good snow and I don't know if they had snow making equipment there in its day or not. That is another subject though! |
