I REMEMBER THE OLD DIRT TRACK PRIOR TO THIS ONE,ILIVED IN NAPANEE JUST EAST OF SHANNONVILLE,THE CARS THEY RAN THERE WERE MOSTLY VINTAGE TIN LATE FIFITIES FORDS AND GMS AS I QUESS WHAT WE WOULD CALL TODAY A LATE MODEL CLASS.THERE WAS A WHITE ROSE STATION AT THE END OF MY STREET AND I LOT OF THE LOCALS USED THIS STATION AS HOME BASE. i REMEMBER AS A KID WATCHING SEVERAL CARS BEING BUILT FROM START TO FINISH THAT RAN THE TRACK.iF i REMEMBER CORRECTLY THEY RAN FRIDAY NIGHTS , AS THE GAS STATION ALWAYS CLOSED EARLY.SIMILIAR TO ALOT OF TRACKS OF THAT ERA IT JUST SAT OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF A FARMERS FIELD.tHE BUILDINGS THAT ARE PICTURED I THINK WERE SOME OF WHAT WAS ORIGINALLY THERE.

Rob,

Did your grandfather race on this track or the earlier Shannonville one? The oval that is still there was only built in 1979. The earlier Shannonville Speedway was on the property where the road course now sits.

I'd love to see your photos or any other info that you have. I have very little info on either Shannonville oval.

it is my father i was talking about.  the track that  we walked around was the oval that is still there.  ( beside the road course)  the sign there says trailblazer park. before they raced speedway bikes and flat track bikes it was a dirt oval, it's the same location that's still there, as i can remember anyway.  give me your e-mail and i'll send a pic. of the last car my father raced.

Right - I misread your message.

My e-mail is webmaster@canadianracer.com. I'm looking forward to seeing your photos. I've never seen anything from the newer Shannonville oval.

Did they race Friday night? Any idea what year it closed? Any other info that you remember would be appreciated.

The oval I remember as a kid was the original that was replaced with the road course. That goes back to around the late 60's.When the road course was originally built I remember they used to run carts and as well you could go and rent carts for a few quick laps.I mentioned before I remember the cars that ran on the original oval being early 50s Fords and GMs.I remember

one guy that ran there, built his  car down at the local White Rose station, think the last name was Butcher. If I am not msitaken it used to be

a busy track as it was the closest to Napanee,as Belleville didnt have a track

and Kingston was about 30 miles away.Back in those days you just didnt pick up and drive 30 miles down the road on a Friday night.People stayed closer to home, went to the drivein, Dairy Queen or Chucks Lunch downtown for a burger/fries.Dont remember the mobility being as great as the 70s and 80s.It was all local s with back yard builds who ran these type of tracks.

Nothing fancy but good late model fender to fender racing.

Rob,

I don't remember getting an e-mail last week. Do you mind sending it again?

What was your dad's name? Whatever info your mom can find would be reatly appreciated. I have very little information on many of the tracks that you mentioned.

Wow Rob's dad sounds like a cool cat to be around. It must have been really nice to have all these tracks in the area where you could run several nights a week and never have to drive more than an hour.

I raced a Quad 4 wheeler at Shannonville back in the 1990's and remember they had some tough noise bylaws to follow back then.If those laws are still in effect it would be pretty tough to race stock cars there now.
