...took a drive with my son to see this old facility last night - truly in the middle of nothing. Don't know much of the history of the facility, as I arrived in Calgary in 1998, but put a grader on it and one could probably do some dirt tracking

The Stampede Auto Racing Association was still conducting races at Stampede Speedway in 1987. The last race at Stampede Speedway was in September 1987. It was a sprint car show promoted by Rod Parks and Gary Miller.

From an issue of Wheelspin in early 1968 the top three for the 1967 season in early-late was Randy Green, Fred Pinder and Redge Bowett; in the modified class it was L. Eby, Wayne Desabrais and Frank Weiss.

That would be the original Stampede Speedway, later called Circle 8,  that opened in 1967 and closed in the early '80s.

The track in the photos was named after it and opened around the time that the original track closed.

DEL KORNELSON#75- the BoWeevil

Hi to you all
Wow this brings back great days at Circle 8. I grew up here with my two sisters, Char and Missy and racing here with my Dad, Del Kornelson, my uncle Lorne and Uncle Pack..and mom Jungle Jane. My dad won many championships at the track and also held the track record for super stock class. We even had Paul Newman drive dad's car while he was filming Buffalo Bill. We used to collect bottles and take them back to the pits for a free pop and chips and then we would have the big bomb fires. We have a many newspaper clippings and track books that we have kept over the years....so many great names. Don Smith, Fred Pender, Phelps Boys, Brian Selby, Morros Brothers. Gary Miller, Lloyd Eby, Chopper, Giverhaugs.....so many. My email is joencinz@shaw.ca if you need info.... I am looking forward to running by the track to see it..
Cheers
