thanks for a great article.  Re the speedway between Bridgenorth and Lakefield (Cedar.....). Do you know if it was on the north side or south side of the road and the distance from one of the towns so I can try and find the sight of the track next time I',m visiting the inlaws in the area??? Thanks-ML

Unfortunately, the newspaper articles or even the Cedar Circle advertisements didn't give very detailed directions. This is pretty typical of many tracks back then. They usually only gave rough directions and I assume they must have had signs back then pointing you to the track.

I've wondered the same thing for a long time but I haven't been able to find out. The newspaper ads claim the track was paved at the end so it's probably still there. Rarely do old paved tracks get ripped up. I tried finding it on Google maps but the satellite resolution is not fine enough to see anything. I don't know exactly where it was to go looking for it either.

I also was looking at the satellite image and have found a couple suspect areas but is hard to tell because the image was shot in the winter.I grew up in peterborough and know the area very well so this will be something I look into.Just going to wait till the spring so i can get a better look and ask some locals.

P.S.Your site is something that really peeked my interest please keep up the good work.also I checked out the stampede speedway in alberta you have on this site this summer and is still all the same as in the pics. But I did find some concrete slabs piled up on the top of corner four that look to be the outside retaining wall and two slaps where the starter stand would of been you can see them in the satellite image and also some half burnt boards that im guessing are from the grand stands.Cant wait to go find some of the other tracks on here.

thank you

Would that be the 8th line?

Joe Coons used to be a racer back in those days. Interesting that he owns the property now. I don't know who owned Cedar Circle back then though - maybe it was him.

Steve - do you have any more information on Apsley Acres? It didn't get covered very well in the Peterborough newspaper.

I grew up at tracks in the area.  My father Tom Moore ran at Island I remember a figure 8 trophy at home, my uncle Howard Moore ran at Cedar Circle and Bell City, dad was his mechanic.  Prior to that dad and Uncle Howard ran at Ganaraska.

I would like to see some pics please email to david660@sympatico.ca

I was so exctied to come across this artical.  I have heard so many stories about these days from my parents who attended many races.  My mother is the daughter of the #79 ('53 Ford Victoria) car owner, Leroy Hyland (of Ponty Pool), driven byJohn Maracle.  My parents have lots of memorabilia from those days, including trophies and papers with track times, tickets and photos.  My grandpa hauled the stock car with a '55 Ford F-100 that still parked in my parents garage today.  If I could, I would upload a picture of the car being worked on by the boys before race night that I have on my computer.  Thanks for this! It's made my day knowing that other people are connected to a great piece of my family history.

Message for Trish. I have recently met John Maracle. He would like a copy of the picture of the car 79 if possible. How can I get in touch with you?
