Edmonton, AB

Status
Closed

Years in Operation: 1968-1977

Name History:

Track Configurations:
3/8 mile paved oval

Notes:
  • Built by a group of drivers who were dissatisfied with Speedway Park
  • Site was originally the Jasper Place Dump
  • Located Hwy 16 west - Winterburn overpass, 1 mile north
  • Map location at right is approximate
  • Operated by the Edmonton Area Racing Association
  • Designed by Terry Cunningham
  • Eric and Phil Dowler did much of the excavation for the original construction
  • Ray Wild was the first General Manager
  • Raced Wednesday nights in the early years
  • Opened July 16, 1968
  • Some sources indicate the track was originally dirt but I am unable to find any proof - appears to have been paved from day one
  • The 1970 rules stated that cars between 1955 and 1970 as Super Stock and Early Lates were for 1953-1960
  • Early Lates were 6 cylinder
  • Final event was October 16, 1977
  • Track closed due to a combination of factors - dropping car counts, fewer spectators, an increase in rent for the property and an industrial park built next to it
  • When the track closed the EARA moved to now re-opened Speedway Park then called Cobra Raceway
