Delaware
Speedway - June 26
Posted:

It's
been 20 years since my only visit to Delaware. The right timing
and a 142-lap Late Model feature led me to make the long drive
through Toronto traffic to make another visit.

Pinecrest
Speedway AND Speedway Park Reunion
Posted:
May 27, 2009
Updated: June 2, 2009

|
Those two legendary one half-mile dirt ovals located
side-by-side on Highway 7 near the long gone village of Maple,
were in the post war years the birthing place for stock car
racing as we know today. Speedway Park operated from 1950
to 1953 featuring stocks, sprints and late models . Pinecrest
Speedway which opened in July 1948 and operated for but two
years , was first the home for the fast--and dangerous-- sprint
cars , with the fledgling stocks being presented as an afterthought.
Over that year and the following --1949--the stocks grew in
popularity to the point when on a Wednesday twilight meet
of July 13 '49 a seminal event took place. For a first time
the promotor advertised the Pinecrest meet in the newspapers,
fliers were printed and handed out , and a program was available
for the fans --complete with the 26 drivers' names; two of
whom, Ted Hogan and Wallie Branston later became members of
the prestigious Motorsports Hall Of Fame . To commemorate
this event of some 60 years ago and to recognise all those
"youngsters" who drove those two dirt ovals over 1948 to 1953
a reunion is scheduled for Saturday July 11 at the Pinecrest
Restaurant on #7 highway commencing at 1:30 in the afternoon.
All who ran those two dirt ovals, their family members, their
friends and fans are invited to attend and to give recognition
to those stock car pioneers who breathed dirt and drove around
the turns in the blinding dust well over a half century ago.
A luncheon is planned for noon that day at the restaurant

Request - Richard Petty at the CNE in 1958 |
|
The
Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame is looking for photos of
Richard Petty's car that he raced at the NASCAR Grand National
event at the CNE Speedway on July 18, 1958. This was Richard's
first career GN event. He raced a 1957 Oldsmobile with the
#142, not the more famous #43 that he raced for most of his
career.
